Art: Mexican Lotería Tablas

Mexican Lotería Tablas

I’ve sadly never been to Mexico, but I did come across these playing cards in San Antonio, Texas, on my recent DTour around North America. San Antonio is only 150 miles away (a 2.5-hour drive) from the Mexican border and there’s a large Hispanic population, and interestingly most of the souvenirs available in the Market Square are imports from Mexico.

Although at first puzzled by what these cards are actually used for (and why framed prints of individual images are sold as artwork…) I’ve found out that these lotería tablas are actually a Mexican version of bingo and apparently hugely popular! I just particularly liked the images to be honest, and I’m going to put up all the tablas on one wall as a sort of artwork. If nothing else then they will at least be good Spanish vocabulary practice… IMG_0809
